Ragnar is headed for Silicon Valley to meet a client attending the elite Omega Fortnight technology conference. The event is just getting underway as Ragnar arrives at the extravagant estate of software mogul Eldon “Duke” Mantus. Before the conference is over, Mantus’s lover, a brilliant young graduate student, will be shot to death. Unless Ragnar can prove otherwise, the authorities will stand by their ruling that it was an accident and the shooter will get off scot-free. To discover the truth Ragnar must take on a formidable political figure, neutralize her clandestine network, and expose the secret past she will do anything to hide.

Barry Richman has created an entertaining story that is complex, interesting, and provides a nice plot integration between the worlds of Venture Capitalists and creepy government conspiracies. The characters are odd but well developed (buttkickers, babes, and billionaires--my personal favorite is Senor Ortega) and the story moves along at a pretty good clip. The fact that its set in Silicon Valley is also a bit of a differentiator (not too many murder mysteries set in our neck of the woods). I really enjoyed the book, this is a great vacation read.

Ragnar Barry Richman 9781463518042 Books Reviews

I read a lot of "big time" mystery authors and Ragnar easily compares which is particularly noteworthy for a first time author. Witty, fun and fast paced but keep a dictionary handy because Richman is no slouch when it comes to vocabulary. What, a book that actually makes you think while you read it? UHHHMMM! I anxiously await the next adventure for Ragnar and hope the wait will be short.
I bought Barry Richman's Ragnar soon after it came out and finished it in four evenings. I appreciated the author's wit and enjoyed deciphering references to San Francisco Bay Area places and characters. A fun read, especially if you know the Silicon Valley and Mendonoma Coast "scenes," which make for a nice contrast. Thrillers aren't normally my thing, but this one won me over.
Ragnar is a wild, imaginative ride with unexpected and mysterious twists. This detective/action adventure is great fun to read with Ragnar, as a complex, flawed but thoroughly likeable detective. Throughout the novel his sly sense of humor prevails. His cohorts and nemesis are richly penned out as well.

Anyone who lives in Northern California will also really enjoy the Silicon Valley, San Francisco/Oakland and the coastal locations.

Barry Richman's deft writing brings a cool combination of fantasy and reality to this really remarkable adventure/mystery.
I finished Ragnar with a great sense of satisfaction and fun,
and I'm definitely hoping for a sequel soon
Every once and awhile you pick up a book not knowing what to expect and when you finish exclaim, "Wow, where did that come!" Such is the case with "Ragnar," a fast moving P.I. thriller from first time author Barry Richman.

Richman is from the Elmore Leonard school of terse dialog, well drawn, often quirky characters and in this case a twisting, operatic plot line inspired by Verdi's "Rigoletto." He does his set up quickly. Ragnar is a former black ops mercenary who makes his living as a security consultant. He drives a Maserati, lives on the California coast north of San Francisco, and is a health hazard to anyone who tries to mess with him (think Lee Child's Jack Reacher). Socially, he'd prefer to be left alone, but he does keep a well stocked bar.

Ragnar reluctantly take an assignment which finds him attending an elite technology conference at the palatial Italianate estate of software mogul Eldon "Duke" Mantus, the fourth richest billionaire in the world. The Duke, who collects expensive toys, powerful friends and the wives of his fellow software titans, has created a replica of his favorite Italian city, replete with canals. Ragnar's new client is Mantus' Chief Financial Officer, who knows his boss's every secret and has hired Ragnar to discover the identity of his daughter's secret lover. The conference provides an appropriately operatic backdrop, replete with a kidnapping gone bad, which launches the plot into high gear.

Ragnar's role in all this is to outwit and outmuscle the bad guys, aided along the way by a deadly former comrade-in-arms. Short chapters and tight writing keep the pace brisk and suspense building, and each chapter left me wanting to read on. There are beautiful women (both good and bad), sex aplenty, martial arts action, more abductions and deadly mayhem leading to a sinister government plot to spy on civilians. But Ragnar also has his contemplative side; he is a wry observer of human nature with often caustically funny views of corruption and greed in the name of patriotism. Highly recommended.
A solid mystery/thriller and an excellent weekend escape. If you enjoy a story with well drawn characters, a protagonist w/ flaws, a villain you can enjoy hating and a west coast setting, you'll enjoy this book. I hope to see Ragnar return.
If you like gumshoe and suspense fiction, you'll enjoy this clever fast-paced book by Barry Richman. There's a lot of action in this plot-filled story about murder, seduction, abduction, and data base thievery among Silicon Valley fat cats and their minions, against a backdrop of the "war on terror". Along with enjoying the read,I got a kick out of the wordplay which had me laughing out loud at every page. Richman's observations of California millionaires and Mendonoma Coast laid-back types are extremely witty. His Maserati-driving hero Ragnar maneuvers his way through every bad guy situation wielding an arsenal of status brand-names (Jean-Marc XO, anyone?) and puncturing all the cultural memes in his path; the result is hilarious.
Loved it. LOVED IT!!! Cries out for a sequel or twenty. Barry Richman is a writer's writer, with a sense of humor that made me laugh out loud. Just enough cleaving to the genre and plenty of individual character and brainiac wit. The only thing better than reading about Ragnar would be sleeping with him. Oh, well. Only had to look up three words. First time I had to look up ANY words in decades. Either I'm reading the wrong books or he's a class act. He's a class act.
